Understanding how to use tools of inquiry while teaching central concepts and structures of discipline(s) can create meaningful learning experiences to students.
Reflect My first artifact is a thematic unit plan on the Mexican culture. The unit plan consists of incorporating the Mexican culture into all four subjects, which are math, language arts, science, and social studies. The unit plan enables students to learn about central concepts in the Mexican culture as well provide students with abilities to do research on this particular culture. This artifact also helps students with stereotypical assumptions they might have on this culture. The artifact shows my understanding of the major concept, which is the Mexican culture and how I used different tools of inquiry in order for students to learn about the people and the culture of this country. The unit also helps students find similarities and differences between their own culture and the Mexican culture making them aware that even though they might live in a different country they still might have things in common.
The second artifact is a certificate I received after attending The Texas Association for the Improvement of Reading conference. This conference allowed me to as a student to be engaged in a professional discourse on encouraging students to read and write. One of the sessions I attended spoke about using children's name as a way of developing their alphabetic principles giving me several tools of inquiry on how to use student's name as a meaningful way of learning letters names and sounds. Another session I attended talked about motivating readers, this provided me with helpful tips and ideas on the subject matter of reading to help motivate students to want and love to read. This conference showed my commitment to wanting to be able to learn about new ways to encourage students to read and write while providing me with the proper tools of inquiry to make reading and writing meaningful to students.
Project The artifacts, of the unit plan; have enabled me to build lesson plans that will be captivate my students to learn while integrating the structures of disciplines that I will teach incorporating one major concept as the Mexican culture throughout all subjects. These artifacts show my philosophy on teaching of how important it is to build a foundation for my students on four major subjects before I can go on and teach them something else. It’s important for students to be taught the basic subjects to be able to build a foundation for their learning. It’s important that as teachers we continue to learn and be informed of different ways to help our students learn. My certificate from the TAIR conference shows my motivation on continuing to learn to better my profession and my delivery to my students in my future practice. Teachers should never stop learning because if we stop learning our student stop learning with us that why it’s important that as teacher we attend conferences or seminars to help us learn about different teaching strategies that will be help our student’s learning experiences be meaningful as they are learning.
